With apologies to Scott Kelby who does this sort of thing better than anyone I know, I am going to do a Q&A about the feedback I’ve received on my iPad articles located at Photofocus.com.
Q. Scott don’t you know that you really shouldn’t ever even say the word Apple because some of us so blindly hate Steve Jobs and Apple products that we may never read your blog again?
A. I will miss you.
Q. If you don’t stop Tweeting about the iPad I will stop following you on Twitter.
A. Again, I will miss you and wish you the best of luck.
Q. Is it possible that you would consider not writing about the iPad because it bothers those of us who either can’t afford it, or just are so full of hate and bitterness that we can’t stand it or anything else that might bring someone joy or happiness or a more productive life?
A. Sorry no. I write about whatever I think is relevant and important. I will probably be writing fairly regularly about the iPad because of its potential impact on the photography world.
Q. But why Apple - why not Microsoft?
A. As far as I know Microsoft hasn’t talked about an iPad-like device. I will look at it if they do and hope for the best.
Q. Well then I want to know if you realize that because you even said the word Apple, we think you’re an Apple fanboy.
A. Fair enough - you’d be wrong - I’ve openly criticized Apple before and will again when they deserve it - and you’re probably an Apple hater or a Windows fanboy. What’s your point?
Q. Well I think my point is you don’t realize you’re fat!
A. That’s not a question but okay and you’re ugly - at least I can go on a diet. Can we get off the personal attacks and TRY to talk substance here?
Q. But the iPad isn’t everything I ever dreamed of in a $499 device. Why should I buy one?
A. I’m not saying you SHOULD buy one. I’ve never told ANYONE they should buy one. I am saying I will buy one - or actually several.
Q. I read your post today on how the iPad is really more of a content capture device than a content creation device. So how come it doesn’t have an SD card reader built - in?
A. I think you should re-read the post because you have missed the point. Your laptop has an SD card reader. If you really need an SD card reader, buy a laptop or a SD card reader adapter that will let you put images on your iPad from there.
Q. But shouldn’t the iPad at least have a camera?
A. Sigh - AGAIN - please re-read my posts. It’s not supposed to be a camera. If you’re reading my blog I assume you already have at least one camera - probably many. Why do you need another camera? The iPad is about consuming content. CONSUMING it.
Q. But it’s from Apple so shouldn’t I just ignore all facts and say it’s too expensive?
A. Well as an Apple hater that may be a good strategy but at $499 it cost less than my first iPhone and less than half of what most pundits predicted it would. At $499 it is very affordable for most people.
Q. Is it okay if I just hate on your iPad posts without even reading them?
A. Sure it’s up to you - but if you read them you may secretly learn something that changes your mind. It’s okay. You don’t actually have to tell anyone you changed your mind. You can continue to exhibit faux outrage to all your friends so you look cool as an Apple hater.
Q. Why can’t I just jump to conclusions? Do I really have to wait for your entire series on the iPad to form an opinion on your position?
A. Nah - you can just start hating on me right away if you like - but if you do actually wait for the whole series, there’s that pesky problem of facing the fact that you may have to change your mind. The facts and arguments I present over time may influence you to stop hating on the iPad because it’s the cool thing to do and start looking at ways it could help you. Can you deal with that?
Q. Well I don’t know. Could I at least still pretend to think Apple automatically sucks and that I won’t ever buy an iPad?
A. Sure - your friends never need to know - but then again, you won’t be able to pull it out in public. That is a high price to pay for being stylish :)
Q. Isn’t it true that people attacked the Mac, the iMac, the iPod, the iPhone and lots of other Apple products when they were first announced?
A. Yes - it’s sort of a routine. Apple announces a product - the haters start their hate. And Apple just goes on to sell millions or tens of millions or hundreds of millions of units anyway.
Q. Well as long as you won’t tell anyone, I am interested in actually winning an iPad. I hear that you’re giving away an iPad to one of your Twitter followers. Is that true?
A. Yes, ANYBODY who is following me on Twitter is eligible to win as long as they are at least 18 years of age. You can see all the details here. http://scottbourne.com/post/357128226/yep-i-am-giving-away-an-ipad - And after that, I’ll give away at least one more. So there are many chances to win. Thanks for playing.
