There’s a part in Brad Pitt’s baseball movie (Moneyball) where he and a scout are trying to convince a third baseman to sign with the team and switch to first base. Brad Pitt’s character gets asked by the prospect, “Isn’t it hard to switch to first?” to which Pitt replies – “Nah it’s not hard.” The scout – a wise man with years of experience and an urge to tell the truth says “It’s incredibly hard.” Well folks, welcome to hummingbird photography. Hands down, the hardest thing I’ve ever tried to do with a camera. The creature you see pictured here is an immature Costa’s Hummingbird (Calypte costae.) It’s about two inches long. It can fly backwards and is super fast. While I am sure there are better pictures of this bird out there, I’m relived to have even this shot. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. Stick with something easy like eagle photography.
For some reason some of the Nikon cameras don’t recognize the Sigma 300-800 f/5.6 lens but that is the lens I used on this image.
I liked this shot but the light was flat so I used one of Topaz’s painterly effects and I think it makes for a nice image.

Sometimes the bear has other ideas and you get to wait for a while right where you are. This bear guarded our boat for an hour before he moved on - thankfully we made the tide
Think you need the latest and greatest camera to make a great image? This was one of my top sellers back in the day.
