I have led hundreds of photo workshops but I am getting a bit long in the tooth to lead big groups these days. I am fine with leading a private* workshop a few times each year. (#Can be shared with one other person to help you defer your costs.)
You are welcome to join me for a private photo or video workshop in the Santa Rita Mountains of southern Arizona. We'll work from a dugout blind on a private ranch photographing local and migratory species. You can expect setups for photo/video or both along with instruction for photo/video or both.
We will work at a spot where we typically see anywhere between 10-20 different species and possibly hundreds of birds each day. What you may see depends on what time of year you come but here are just some of the possibilities...
Phainopepla, Lawrence’s Goldfinch, Abert’s Towhee, Yellow-eyed Junco, White-throated Swift, Screech Owl, Violet-crowned Hummingbird, Scaled Quail, Gambel’s Quail, Greater Road Runner, Montezuma Quail, Inca Dove, Northern Cardinal, Cactus Wren, Abert’s Towhee, Harris’s Hawk, Pyrrhuloxia, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Gila Woodpecker, Elegant Trogon, Mexican Chickadee, Red-faced Warbler, Olive Warbler, Red Crossbill, Zone-tailed hawk, and Juniper Titmouse are just some of the species we will most likely see in perfect light, with perfect perches and perfect backgrounds.
1- The basics and fine points of digital exposure; how to get the right exposure every time after making a single test exposure.
2- How and why to work in Manual, Shutter or Aperture Mode and when Manual Mode is appropriate.
3- How to approach free and wild birds without disturbing them.
4- Learn the basics of bird behavior and how to use that knowledge to help you create better images.
5- How to tell stories with a camera.
6- To spot good situations and to choose the best perspective.
7- To see, evaluate, and understand the light.
8- To design pleasing images by mastering your camera’s AF system.
9- How to evaluate wind and sky conditions and understand how they affect bird photography.
10- Private image/portfolio critiques.
11-Anything else you can think of whether or not it's on this list.
And much more...
Fees include your workshop leader's travel expenses, fees for using the blind, our guide's fees, and instruction. We typically work two sessions a day of approximately 2.5 hours per session.
Trips are available for three, four or five days. I only do one trip per month. Fees are $1100 per day. Doesn't include your travel, lodging, rental car in AZ and food expenses or tips for the guide. All trips must be pre-paid. You can secure your dates with a non-refundable deposit of $2500. The balance is due 45 days before the workshop. Failure to pay will absolutely result in forfeit of your deposit. Sorry, no exceptions.
Travel insurance for your private workshop is strongly recommended. Once your deposit or final workshop fee is paid, there are no refunds. No exceptions. Travel insurance is your only protection should your plans chain for health reasons.
You will arrive in Tuscon, AZ the day before your workshop starts. We will stay at a hotel near Green Valley, AZ and travel to the blinds each day in the morning and afternoon. While you are responsible for your own food costs, you will be invited to share at least one meal a day with me. I recommend scheduling your departure back home for the next morning after the final day of the workshop.
There is no smoking on this trip. No weapons allowed. All seats sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Those who have been with me in the past are welcome to a $50 discount on the workshop fee. Dates may sell out quickly and you should allow at least 60 days notice for your preferred dates. Call 253-332-5808 if you want to book a trip or have questions.
